Houseplant Owners Advised to Relocate Plants Before October
Everyone with houseplants urged to move them before October
As colder months approach, houseplant enthusiasts are being encouraged to give extra attention to their beloved greenery, especially snake plants, by relocating them to more suitable spots before temperatures drop. Gardening expert Graham Smith from LBS Horticulture offers valuable advice to help these resilient plants thrive through autumn and winter.
Snake plants, prized for their easy maintenance and durability, need thoughtful placement as the weather cools. Smith stresses the importance of keeping these plants away from cold drafts and ensuring they are in spaces where the temperature remains above 10°C. The ideal spot for a snake plant is a bright area, but out of direct sunlight, Smith notes, as reported by the *Express*. While they can tolerate low light, this may cause the plant to lose its distinctive variegation.
Overwatering is a common mistake that can harm snake plants, especially in cooler climates. “Snake plants don’t need a lot of water,” Smith advises. Water them only when the soil is dry to the touch, ensuring proper drainage. Never let the plant sit in water, as this can lead to root rot. In the winter, snake plants need even less water, so it’s essential to adjust your watering schedule accordingly.
Smith also recommends feeding snake plants monthly from April to September and gently dusting their leaves to help with respiration. If you notice yellow leaves, it could be a sign of overwatering, particularly during colder months. In such cases, check for signs of root rot and allow the soil to dry out before watering again. Conversely, wrinkled leaves indicate underwatering, and the plant can be revived by gradually increasing water over the course of several days.
Though slow-growing, snake plants may eventually outgrow their pots. Smith suggests repotting them in the spring into a slightly larger, sturdier pot to prevent them from toppling as they grow taller. He recommends using well-draining houseplant or cactus compost to keep them in good health.
With the proper care, including mindful positioning and watering, houseplants like the popular snake plant can flourish throughout the colder months, continuing to bring a sense of vitality and tranquility to your home.
